Overview
Right in the heart of Cardiff’s shopping district, just steps from St David’s and the arcades, you’ll find Chopstix - Cardiff at 20 Queen St, Cardiff CF10 2BU, United Kingdom. I’ve stopped by more times than I can count-sometimes for a quick lunch between meetings, other times after a late cinema run-and it’s become one of those reliable spots you instinctively head to when you want something hot, filling, and fast without compromising on flavour.
The location alone makes it a winner. Queen Street is one of the busiest stretches in the city centre, and being based there means it’s ideal for students from Cardiff University, office workers, and tourists exploring the capital of Wales. Accessibility matters when choosing where to eat, and this branch nails it. You can walk in, order within minutes, and be back out with a steaming box of noodles before your parking meter even starts to stress you out.
From experience, the ordering process is straightforward. The menu is built around a simple concept: choose your base, then add your favourite toppings. Egg fried rice, plain noodles, or half-and-half form the foundation, and then you can load up with dishes like sweet and sour chicken, salt and pepper chicken, beef in black bean sauce, or vegetable spring rolls. The staff move quickly but stay friendly, which makes a difference during peak hours. I once visited on a Saturday afternoon when the queue reached the door, yet the team kept everything flowing smoothly without anyone feeling rushed.
Fast-casual Asian dining has grown significantly across the UK in the past decade. According to reports from the British Hospitality Association, demand for quick-service international cuisine continues to rise, especially in city centres where convenience drives footfall. Chopstix taps into that demand with a format that mirrors the efficiency of global chains while still offering bold, recognisable flavours rooted in Chinese-inspired cooking.
One thing I’ve personally appreciated is portion size. If you’re hungry, you won’t leave disappointed. On a recent visit, I opted for noodles topped with caramel chicken and spicy Korean-style chicken. The balance between sweetness and heat was spot on, and the texture of the noodles held up well, not overly greasy or dry. For students watching their budget, the value-for-money aspect stands out. Compared to many independent restaurants nearby, the price point feels accessible without sacrificing quantity.
Food safety and hygiene are often overlooked in casual reviews, yet they matter. In the UK, food businesses are inspected by local authorities under the Food Standards Agency’s hygiene rating scheme. While ratings can change over time and should always be checked directly for the latest update, established high-street brands typically operate under strict compliance procedures. From what I’ve observed at this branch, surfaces are kept clean, ingredients are stored properly, and staff follow consistent serving practices behind the counter.
Reviews online tend to highlight speed and affordability as key strengths. Of course, like any busy takeaway, peak times can mean a short wait, and seating is limited compared to full-service restaurants. It’s not the place for a long, candle-lit dinner; instead, it’s designed for practical dining. Still, that’s part of its charm. You know exactly what you’re getting-freshly prepared hot food served fast.
For anyone exploring Cardiff’s food scene, especially around Queen Street, this spot fits naturally into a day of shopping or sightseeing. Grab a box to-go and walk down toward Cardiff Castle, or take your meal to one of the nearby benches if the weather cooperates. The combination of central location, straightforward menu options, and consistent flavour makes it easy to see why so many locals return.
Having worked in hospitality myself for several years, I pay close attention to workflow and service systems. The assembly-line method used here reduces errors and keeps orders accurate, which in turn improves customer satisfaction. It’s a simple operational model, but when executed properly, it works extremely well.
If you’re craving noodles, rice bowls, or quick Asian-inspired comfort food in Cardiff city centre, this Queen Street branch delivers exactly what it promises: generous portions, bold flavours, and dependable service in one of the city’s most convenient locations.

Just amazing!!! The food is delicious, and the staff is wonderful. Even in the rush hour, they manage to do everything quickly and at the same time be really really kind to customers.
